Cuban baseball star Angel Mario Tamayo says, "Everything is about adaptation."
At 28 years old, Tamayo knew his career as a professional baseball player was peaking, so he decided to leave Cuba to try to make in the American big leagues before it was too late. That was three years ago. He spent two of those years in the Dominican Republic, playing Winter League baseball, which is the highest level of professional baseball in the Dominican Republic- many players go on the to major leagues.
While he was there, unbeknownst to Tamayo, his manager declined a contract offer by his team, the Aguilas Cibaenas (Cibao Eagles). Considered bad form, declining an offer makes it difficult to sign with another team. But, Tamayo says, "It was not my goal to stay in the Dominican Republic, anyway."
