Economic Gardening
Economic Gardening is an entrepreneurial approach to economic development. Started by Chris Gibbons of the City of Littleton, Colorado, hundreds of communities, states and countries are implementing this economic development approach to creating wealth and jobs in their communities. In some cases it is the primary or only approach to economic development, rather than some of the traditional approaches like recruitment and incentives to lure out of state companies to a community.
In the Iowa Lakes Corridor, economic gardening is a new addition to our strategic plan placing a strong emphasis on entrepreneurship, continuing to enhance this beautiful lakes region by expanding amenities, and providing more career and employment opportunities to existing and prospective residents. To create a supportive and nurturing environment for entrepreneurs, a number of initiatives are underway including the annual Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute, industry specific entrepreneurial training, the creation of a venture capital fund, and market research assistance for existing and start-up companies.
If you are interested in starting a business, please see our Resource Guide or contact the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation to learn what assistance is available in our region for entrpreneurs.
