Qualifications:
• An accredited college degree, preferably in library science is required; a related degree and experience may be substituted • Formal knowledge of the developmental skills of children and a genuine interest for young people and their needs is required • Knowledge of accepted principles and practices of library administration and a working knowledge of library automation systems is required • Previous library experience is strongly preferred • Must have strong customer service skills, ability to share ideas, flexibility, and patience • Must be creative, possess art & craft skills, and have ability to work on projects independently • Must demonstrate initiative, good judgment, tact, and courtesy • Computer skills required for outreach programs • Valid Iowa driver’s license with acceptable driving record required for outreach programs • Librarian Certification Courses through the State Library of Iowa must be completed within 2 years of hire

Responsibilities:
The Youth Services Librarian is responsible for promoting reading, special activities and outreach programs for families and children from infants to 5th graders, and occasionally teens; manages the children’s department, supervises the Young Adult Services Librarian, carries out special projects and supervises one additional staff position. This position requires a creative individual dedicated to advocacy for children’s needs and an understanding of the importance of reading and lifelong learning. It requires knowledge of developmental skills, teamwork and cooperation with institutions, parents, pre-schools, child development centers, and other groups working with children. The work involves patron information of a confidential nature. Duties Include: • Plan and execute story hours, special activities, after school programs and summer reading program for children at the library • Conduct regularly scheduled community outreach programs to schools and children’s facilities • Conduct tours, give speeches, and teach workshops for the public and other librarians • Promote and market parental reading at home and “Books for Babies” program • Collaborate with schools, child-care facilities, and home-schoolers on curriculum and cooperative projects • Select, purchase and weed all children’s library materials within budget parameters • Maintain a viable collection of children’s materials, explore new formats, & maintain knowledge of books, authors, & trends using a variety of print and online resources • Computer design and implement PR and marketing campaigns, materials, and documents • Write a monthly column for the newsletter and periodic columns, radio spots, & news releases • Represent library presence to other community organizations; promote reading & the library • Staff the children’s desk as needed, assist patrons with material selection & reader’s advisory
