AS H.S. GRADUATION RATES RISE, IOWA FOCUSES ON STEM, POST-SECONDARY

Iowa public high school graduation rates – already the highest in the country – are up for the fifth year in a row. It’s a testament to the quality of our students, the hard work of Iowa teachers and administrators, and our communities. Our educators are also making strides in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education, and preparing our students for post-secondary education.

Iowa’s employers have asked for an increased focus on STEM, and our schools are responding. Programs like the Governor’s STEM Advisory Council are yielding results – the number of Iowa high school students who took science, technology, engineering or STEM related Advanced Placement (AP) tests increased 22 percent from 2012 to 2015.

Increasing post-secondary education among Iowans is another priority of our state’s leadership and the objective behind the creation of the Future Ready Iowa program.
