Iowa Lakes Community College will receive a grant to help prepare area students for college, the U.S. Department of Education announced.

The Upward Bound grant provides fundamental support as young people in grades 9-12 begin planning their education following graduation from high school.

“This is a good match for Iowa Lakes, as it reflects how all our staff members work to assist students each day,” Valerie Newhouse, President of Iowa Lakes, said. “This grant helps to keep minds growing and it encourages these high school students to believe in themselves as they prepare for college.”

“In addition, students who choose to settle in this area help improve economic development throughout the region,” Newhouse added.

The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants graduate from high school and enroll in and earn diplomas and degrees from colleges and universities.
