A cherished family tradition

County fairs are a fantastic family-friendly tradition. Year after year, they bring communities together for competitions, entertainment, food and festivities.

The first modern Clay County Fair in Spencer, Iowa was held in 1918, six weeks before the Armistice of World War I. It has grown tremendously since then. After a record attendance of 110,105 people in 1928, it was dubbed “The World’s Greatest County Fair.”

It’s one of the most rural-oriented fairs still in operation, with a 35-acre agribusiness/farm machinery display area. It remains one of the most well attended county fairs in America.

This year the Clay County Fair takes place September 9-17. Some extraordinary entertainment is planned to commemorate the fair’ centennial.
