Responsibilities
Perform a variety of routine & complex work in the interpretation & enforcement of adopted codes & related rules/regulations; Respond to complaints of potential code violations relating to signing, building occupancy, hazardous sidewalks, housing conditions, construction, land use, zoning or other code-related matters; Meet with owners, tenants, contractors, developers, businesses to review/explain code requirements; Prepares a variety of studies, reports and related information for decision-making purposes; Patrols and inspects assigned areas to monitor for violations of local codes; Make recommendations to the City Planning or potential code and program revisions; Maintains the City’s summer grass and tree trimming program; Responsible for overseeing the City’s sidewalk snow removal program; Enforces the City’s property maintenance ordinances through both a proactive and demand/complaint response; Prepare, organize and maintain inspection field data; Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High School Diploma and College Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience; Some knowledge of Code Enforcement principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting; working knowledge of applicable laws, standards and regulations related to nuisance and public safety codes; working knowledge of inspection techniques; Must obtain residential and commercial electrical inspection certification within 12 months of hire date; Proficient computer skills; Valid IA Driver’s License with good driving record; Strong communication skills; ability to interact regularly with the citizens of Spencer in a positive, constructive manner.
