Assistant County Attorney
The Buena Vista County Attorney’s Office is hiring for the position of Assistant County Attorney. The office has a particular need of someone with experience managing juvenile delinquency matters, child in need of assistance actions, and mental health/substance abuse commitments. The assignment of cases will be based upon the candidate’s qualifications, experience, personal preferences, and the needs of the office. Experience prosecuting criminal law cases is also desired. The candidate must be admitted to practice law in the State of Iowa and have experience sufficient to permit the candidate to complete his or her work with limited supervision. The attorney may be required to handle emergency matters after regular work hours on a rotating basis with other attorneys. The salary range for this position is $75,000 – $105,000. The position is salary exempt and serves at the discretion of the County Attorney. Buena Vista County provides health, dental, and vision packages, and the position qualifies for IPERS. Responsibilities
The following duties are typical for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Review police reports and communicate effectively with law enforcement, victims, and witnesses in order to make appropriate charging decisions. - Assist law enforcement in criminal investigations both during business hours and after hours. - Exercises good judgment in the disposition of cases consistent with justice, public safety, the well-being of victims and applicable law. Conduct legal research to prepare motions, briefs, and in preparation for hearings and for trial. Attend depositions. Appears in District Associate and Magistrate Courts for all proceedings including arraignments, various motion hearings, and trial. - Prepare and take cases to trial. - Assists all professional and support staff as needed. - Performs various other duties relating to scope of responsibility as assigned by the County Attorney
