When the Community Health Center of Fort Dodge set its sights on expanding into Spencer, IA, it was focused on delivering an essential service to Northwest Iowans. For years, residents in Northwest Iowa had been traveling long distances to access affordable healthcare. With this expansion, Spencer is gaining a vital healthcare resource that will bring jobs, investment, and life-changing services to the region. This clinic will begin taking calls to schedule appointments for medical services starting on March 10th. Starting on March 31st, the Community Health Center will start seeing patients.

The Iowa Lakes Corridor: A Key Partner in Making It Happen

Economic development projects don't happen in isolation. From the start, the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation played a crucial role in bringing this project to life.

"We are grateful for the local connections we have made with both Curt Strouth, President & CEO with the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation, and Sheriffa Jones, Executive Director with the Spencer Chamber. They have been a huge help with arranging meetings and tours and have just been a great resource every step of the way," said Renae Kruckenberg, CEO of the Community Health Center of Fort Dodge.

The Corridor team is an instrumental force, often working behind the scenes to facilitate discussions, connect the businesses with the right people, and provide essential support in navigating the process. Their expertise and local knowledge ensured the project kept moving forward, making Spencer the ideal choice for the healthcare provider's expansion.

A Strategic Decision to Serve Northwest Iowa

"The Northwest part of the state has been an area we have been looking at for a few years due to lack of resources for the underserved population in that part of the state," said Kruckenberg. "We have seen patients traveling from this area to our center in Fort Dodge for care."

The decision to expand into Spencer began to take shape during the organization's 2020 strategic planning session. However, the project gained momentum in May 2023 after discussions with Dr. David Keith, Medical Director of Clay County Public Health, and State Representative Megan Jones. Recognizing the unmet needs of Spencer residents, the Community Health Center set its expansion in motion.

Economic and Healthcare Impact

The new facility will be a valued improvement for Spencer. It will initially create 15 new jobs, with plans for future expansion. These jobs are stable, community-focused positions that will attract healthcare professionals to the region.

The benefits are even more profound for residents. Individuals with Medicaid or no health insurance will no longer have to travel outside the community for essential medical, dental, and mental health services.

"Instead of having to choose between taking time off work or seeking care due to long travel distances, residents will now be able to access these essential services right in town," explained Kruckenberg. "This will not only improve health outcomes but also reduce the burden on individuals who currently have to take half a day or more off work just to access basic healthcare."

“In addition to providing additional healthcare services to our region, this project will also bring a large economic impact with the creation of up to 50 new jobs, the repurposing of an existing building, and a large two-phase capital investment expansion of approximately $6.5M over the next two-three years.” said Curt Strouth, President & CEO of the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation.

Attracting and Retaining Healthcare Professionals

With plans for continued growth, attracting and retaining skilled healthcare professionals in Spencer is a top priority. The Community Health Center plans to address this by offering a competitive benefits package, loan reimbursement options for qualifying professionals, and an environment prioritizing work-life balance.

"We focus on delivering quality care rather than being driven by productivity metrics," said Kruckenberg. This patient-first culture creates a supportive and rewarding workplace, making it an attractive option for healthcare professionals looking to make a difference.

Long-Term Vision for the Spencer Facility

The Community Health Center's ambitions go beyond simply opening the doors. The organization envisions a facility that offers medical, dental, and behavioral health services as well as financial advocacy and social work support.

"We aim to collaborate with local organizations to provide holistic care and meet the broader needs of our patients," Kruckenberg stated. "We are committed to being an active part of the community, just as we are at our other locations."

That commitment extends to community engagement efforts, such as back-to-school initiatives that connect families with essential healthcare services before the academic year begins. The center will become a trusted resource in the region by integrating with local events and outreach programs.
