When historic flooding swept through Spencer, IA, in 2024, the community lost much more than homes and roads. It also lost a critical source of healthcare. Crown Clinics, a longtime provider, was forced to close its doors, leaving hundreds of residents without a primary care provider. But where others saw loss, two local healthcare professionals saw an opportunity.

Peyton Hantelman and Jay Downing, founders of Priority Health Northwest (PHN), recognized the urgency immediately. “We did not want to leave established patients without their primary care provider. We had to move quickly after the sudden closure of Crown Clinics. Within days of the flood, several conversations had taken place, and we knew we were on our way to opening PHN. They were quick to respond to the void left in the community due to the sudden closure of Crown Clinics,” said Peyton Hantelman, Co-owner and provider at Priority Health Northwest.

A Fast-Tracked Launch in a Time of Need

Priority Health Northwest accomplished what might take most businesses over a year in just five months. That speed was driven by a deep commitment to their patients and made possible by strong local support, including assistance from the Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation (Corridor).

From the Corridor’s perspective, the mission was clear: do what it takes to keep healthcare options in Spencer. And that meant more than helping from the sidelines. The organization rolled up its sleeves, providing crucial guidance, connections, and financial support.

“The Iowa Lakes Corridor Development Corporation played a pivotal role in the opening of our clinic,” said Jay Downing, Co-owner and provider at Priority Health Northwest. “We met with several individuals numerous times to lay out plans and projections that led to the opportunity to receive some financing backing as well. Without the help from the Corridor, we would not have been able to open the clinic as quickly as we did. They also provided us with some great references and opportunities for exposure as we opened our doors.”

More Than Medicine, Economic Momentum

Priority Health Northwest is an economic development success story. The clinic has already retained several former Crown Clinics employees, bringing vital jobs and services back into the region after being devastated by historic flooding. And that’s just the beginning. As the patient base grows, PHN plans to hire additional providers and staff, strengthening the local economy and offering new opportunities for professionals who want to stay and serve in rural Iowa.

The clinic also provides a rare blend of convenience and quality care. Open to walk-ins and with extended hours, including evenings and weekends, PHN is removing barriers for working families who may otherwise have gone without care. From treating ear infections to managing diabetes, they’re filling a healthcare gap that could have become a crisis.

“The community has responded so positively to the new clinic,” said the PHN founders. “It has been rewarding to be able to pick up where we left off and continue caring for these patients to ensure they are getting the things they need.”

Building a Business and a Blueprint for Others in the Corridor

Launching a business is never easy, especially a medical clinic after historic flooding. “There are SO many hoops to jump through,” the team shared. “We learned a lot about the step-by-step processes of opening your own business.” They credit persistence, a shared vision, and a strong support network, including the Corridor, as key to making it happen.

Their advice to other entrepreneurs in the region? Don’t let fear hold you back. “Take the risk. There is never growth within your comfort zone… Don’t hesitate to reach out to area groups such as the Iowa Lakes Corridor with questions because they are a wealth of knowledge, and there are lots of individuals there looking to help you grow as a business owner.”

What’s Next: Growth with Heart

For Priority Health Northwest, the future is personal. They want to grow, but not at the expense of what makes them special. “We want to keep the family-business feel and the small, independently owned clinic morale as this sets us apart from other area clinics or healthcare systems.”

Their next steps include expanding services, increasing patient capacity, and adding new providers while preserving the personalized care that has already made them a trusted presence in Spencer.

From the Corridor’s perspective, PHN is a case study of what happens when a community needs to meet entrepreneurial spirit and regional support. It’s a reminder that economic development isn’t always about factories or office parks; it’s also about rebuilding what matters most.
